out of character.
GAME; Crossover.
DATE; November 2008.
JOURNAL; phasic
PLAYED BY; Jewel Staite.
in character.
NAME; Josephine Marguerite St. James. More commonly known as "Joey" or "Jo."
AGE / BIRTHDATE; 23 / June 24th, 1985.
SEXUALITY; Heterosexual!
OCCUPATION; She's does tech support at an Apple Store by day and hacks by night. Really. It's nothing too major at the moment; a little password cracking here, a little encrypting there. Most of it is for a friend of her that happens to be a PI, but she's always looking for other work.
COMIC CHARACTER; Kitty Pryde / Shadowcat.
UNIVERSE; Marvel.
POWERS; Joey's apparent lack of powers is not something she's very pleased about. She thinks that she sort of phased her hand once when she was sixteen, but that was about it. However, she immediately picked up Kitty's knack for technology at a very early age. But yeeeah, that's a no with the phasing. (Maybe her phasing powers could turn on in game? Yeeeah.)
STATUS; She's not shouting it from the rooftops, but it's not exactly a closely guarded secret.
APPEARANCE; Adorable! Cute! Quirky! These are the words used most often when someone tries to describe her appearance. She'll never win any beauty pageants or be at the top of someone's ~Hottest Girls~ list, but there is something about Joey that's charming all the same. Her build is fairly average; 5'4", slender, not particularly curvy. Her eyes are a little on the close-set side of things, but they are a nice shade of green. And her chubby cheeks earned her the nickname of 'Chipmunk' during her earlier years. Still, she really can't complain. After all, children aren't running away in fear just yet. As for her wardrobe, Joey keeps to the basics. Jeans, t-shirts, hoodies, whatever. As for dresses and skirts? Don't hold your breath. That sort of dress is reserved for special occasions only.
PB; Jewel Staite.
PERSONALITY;
- Hates being patronized. Sorry, but when a part of you has been treated like a kid (or, in the case of Kitty, stuck in a perpetual state of innocent teenagerdom) for what seems like ages, you get irritated when someone starts talking down to you.
- Tying into that, Joey has a hard time handling criticism.
- ‘Perky’ may be a strong, but she is a happy person. No, she’s not naïve. No, she’s not all rainbows, puppies, and sunshine. Joey is simply a girl who tries to maintain a positive attitude about things. Whiners, angsters, and people who insist on being ‘Negative Nancys’ get on her last nerve.
- That said, having a good sense of humor is of the upmost importance to her. She loves pranks, jokes, stand up comedy, the whole nine yards. She’s not the world’s greatest comedian herself (her jokes err on the side of playful snark), but give her anything from a Demetri Martin cd to a whoopee cushion and she’ll be entertained for hours.
- Opinionated? Yes. Assertive? Yes. Does she go looking for confrontation? No. Is she likely to back down from one? … It depends. She hates trivial arguments, but she’ll fight you tooth and nail about something she feels strongly about.
- She’s a bit of an outdoorswoman, especially for a self-proclaimed tech geek. She hikes, she swims, she plays sports, and she’d go backpacking in Europe if she could afford it. Loves visiting her family upstate. Nothing is more relaxing than chilling in a hammock with a good book (or her laptop).
- Joey is very much aware that she’d make fantastic money working for some fancy business, but really hates the idea of it. She’d much rather work for the Apple store and do her hax on the side. Mostly because there isn’t anyone in a suit telling her what to do. Yeah, it’s a little illegal, but what isn’t these days?
- If you couldn’t tell, she’s really into being independent and being her own person. Joey has very little interest in commitment and relationships because of this.
- While she isn't a shining pillar of maturity, she is certainly not the wide eyed picture of innocence that Kitty Pryde was. There will be none of that 'tee hee giggle, oh Piotr" from her, thank you very much.
- In all honesty, she's sort of conflicted on how she feels about Kitty. Some writers did a great job. Others did not (she's looking at you, Whedon). That said, there is nothing she hates more than being referred to as Kitty. She does have a real name, you know.
HISTORY;
- Born a few months after the release of Kitty Pryde and Wolverine, Joey’s has Kitty in her head since day one. She’ll be the first one to tell you that having a teenager in your head when you’re seven is one hell of an experience.
- She tried hard not to let the goings on of Kitty affect her too much (although she did go through a bit of a valley girl phase when X-Men: Evolution came out). Kitty’s current situation (ie. skyrocketing through space while fused to a giant bullet) is taking it’s toll as well – she feels like she’s just bulleting through life without a purpose.
- Joey’s tomboyness all makes sense when you look at her family. The St. Jameses were a middle class family that already had three boys when Joey came into the world. Her mother, Laura, did her best to get Joey (who she called Josephine) involved in more feminine things, these activities were always undone by her father and brothers.
- So out of etiquette classes, gymnastics, dance, horseback riding, tennis, and violin lessons, dance and tennis were the only ones that Joey was the least bit interested in. Her mother was not impressed by the fact that her only daughter seemed intent on roughhousing around with the boys. Hiking, swimming, camping, soccer, the list goes on and on.
- With the exception of a few subjects (math and science, to be exact), Joey was annoyingly uninterested in academics. She hung around with a lot of guys and was pretty apathetic about ‘girly’ stuff like dolls and playing house. That eventually turned into not caring about make up, clothes, boys, and gossip.
- She was in the seventh grade when she realized that she was good with computers. Really good with computers. Other people her age were fiddling around with Dollz and Blinkees, but she had her own domain up and was getting involved in advanced HTML. She eventually started tinkering around with physical computer parts and found that she had a talent for that too.
- Her ‘knack’ for computers eventually grew into full blown genius-level skill. (Thanks, Kitty!) Between software programming, hacking, and building her own computers, it was expected that Kitty’d go to MIT or Caltech. At least, that’s what her mother and teachers were pushing her to do. But she in a stunning moment of “rebellion”, she opted to go to the less-renowned-yet-still-good New York Institute of Technology.
- How rebellious! But not really. In any case, she was off to NYIT. She picked up a job at a local Apple Store doing tech support. She even picked up a couple of boyfriends. Overall, things went smoothly - with the exception of some really awkward moments back in 2004 thanks to Whedon’s run on Astonishing X-Men and his brilliant idea of deaging Kitty.
- In a rebellious move that was actually, you know, rebellious, Kitty opted not to get a job at Fancy Corporation X putting her skills to get use after graduation. She kept her job at the Apple Store and looked for something less constricting.
- She’d been doing a little hacking here and there since high school, but nothing too major. That was before one of her old friends came to her with some work. He was a private investigator now and needed her to retrieve some files for him. She pulled it off and he began referring other PIs to her. Hey, she does good work!
- Which is what she’s up to now! Still working at the Apple Store. Still hacking. Still trying to avoid the subject of Getting A Real Job with her mother. It’s not working too well.
PLOT IDEAS; Ohoho, I actually have plot planned for this one. :> Well, she's eventually going to start up a semi-partnership with Jack/Constantine. She'll be doing some hax for him! Starting a paranormal investigation team! Yeeeah. She'll eventually start helping Anne out as well. So she'll kinda serve as an Oracle to the community?
TRIVIA;
- Can recite every line from the movie Blues Brothers.
- Built her parents' laptops, her brother's desktop, and three of the four computers in her apartment. (The fourth may not have been built by her, but it does have several mods added on.)
- Despite all of her tomboyness, has a few girly vices: rings, dancing, and the occasional chick flick.
- She had tap, ballet, and ballroom dancing lessons from the ages of 4 to 16. So she can dance well.
